Student Application

Valley Arts & Science Academy – VASA

The Board of Directors of Valley Arts & Science Academy is pleased that you are interested in enrolling your student in our school. PARENTS/GUARDIANS/FOSTER PARENTS OF APPLICANTS ARE EXPECTED TO READ THE INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE AND TO SIGN THE AGREEMENT ON PAGE 2 OF THE APPLICATION BEFORE SUBMITTING IT.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Each application is date stamped on the day it is received. To meet the deadline, applications must be received by 6:00 PM on the Third Friday of May.
  • Information from each application is entered in a database, and families are notified that the application has been received.
  • After the deadline, if there are more than 40 applications at a grade level, the names of the applicants will be entered in a blind lottery with three entries for each student living in the Lowell, Jackson, or Jefferson Transport attendance areas defined by the Fresno Unified School District and two entries for each student living outside these areas.
  • If a lottery is necessary, it will be held on the Fourth Thursday of May at a site conveniently close to the proposed school site. Affected parents will be notified of the lottery and its location by email or telephone.
  • If a grade level has fewer than 40 applicants, VASA will continue to accept applications past the deadline until capacity is reached.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT VASA - This is a Parent Advisory Committee to nominate future parent Board members as terms expire, to advise the administration on curricular and programmatic matters, and to assist in fundraising, classroom assistance, and chaperoning field trips and school events. VASA will work with parents to develop and adopt a detailed set of parent involvement policies and strategies. Parents and members of the community can serve as members of the Board of Directors, members of the Parent Advisory Council, transportation (car pool) coordinators, office volunteers, planners and chaperones of special events and field trips, guest speakers, fundraisers, tutors, mentors, and more.

VASA’S EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS

  • Each parent or guardian who chooses to submit an application for a child to enroll in VASA will be explained the "School, Parent, Student, Commitment Agreement."
  • Good attendance and good citizenship with an attitude of mutual respect will be emphasized.
  • Parents/guardians can further their child's school success by limiting television viewing, by making sure their student attends school regularly and punctually, by encouraging daily reading, and by providing a home atmosphere conducive to study and intellectual curiosity. Parents/guardians are asked to give a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service yearly. Failure to agree to or to abide by this volunteer commitment will not affect a student’s admission or enrollment status.
  • Before formal, written, periodic progress reports are sent home, parents are expected to attend regularly scheduled conferences with their student’s teacher to review and evaluate the student’s progress and the parents’ support at home. Goals for the next reporting period are set at this meeting. The student will be present to provide input on his or her progress and to participate in setting his or her goals for the next reporting period. Conferences without the student may also be scheduled, and parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to visit the school to observe instruction and to review and evaluate with the teacher evidences of learning or concerns about lack of achievement.

Rights of students leaving VASA – This is to inform parents or guardians of each student enrolling in VASA that a student leaving VASA has no right to enroll in a particular school as a consequence of enrollment in VASA, except to the extent that such a right is extended by the Fresno Unified School District.

Affirmations - VASA will be nonsectarian in its programs, admissions policies, employment practices, contracts, and all other operations, shall not charge tuition, shall not discriminate against any pupil on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or disability, and shall not otherwise to any extent engage in unlawful (federal and State of California) discrimination.
